Wyre residents reminded out of the green and into the blue
Issue Date: 27/01/2010 Press Release No: PR 1579
With little more than a fortnight before an important change to Wyre's waste collection, residents are being reminded that cardboard needs to be moved from the green bin into the blue paper bin.
From 15 February, households have to make the switch before a new state-of-the-art waste treatment centre opens in Thornton.
Advanced technology will squeeze more recycling opportunities from Wyre's waste and significantly reduce the amount going to landfill. But problems will occur at the processing stage if cardboard continues to be left in with green waste.
Information leaflets will shortly be dropping through people's letterboxes as part of Wyre Borough Council's awareness campaign and a frequently asked questions section is available on the website at www.wyrebc.gov.uk.
Officers are also attending the current round of Local Area Forums to answer questions from the public.
Some residents may believe that their blue bin is not big enough to hold cardboard as well as paper, but the council is stressing that people should not be requesting additional bins until they know for certain how the changes are affecting them.
Councillor Vivien Taylor, Living Places Portfolio Holder for Wyre Borough Council, explained: "The impact will be different for every household and it is impossible to judge exactly what this will be until the new system is in place. After this date our officers will be happy to take calls from residents who have problems with capacity.
"To make more space, compact your cardboard as much as possible. If you are still struggling, why not ask a neighbour if there's room in their blue bin.
"And don't forget that excess cardboard is readily accepted at the household waste recycling centres in Fleetwood and Garstang."
